Our History

From Victorian cast iron street furniture, through two world wars, international recognition, global patents, and state‑of‑the‑art manufacturing in Halstead, Gatic represents over 165 years of continuous British engineering evolution.

1858

Foundation as a Jobbing Foundry

Anthony Lewis Thomas established a jobbing iron foundry on Charlton Green, Dover, supplying general castings for local use. This marks the origin of what would become Dover Engineering and later Gatic.

A.L. Thomas & Sons

After Thomas’s death in 1878, the business continued as A.L. Thomas & Sons, expanding production of manhole covers and streetlamps as Dover’s infrastructure grew.

1902

Incorporation and Expansion

The firm was incorporated as a limited company, enabling mechanisation, workforce growth and diversification into heavier engineering products.

1908

Renamed Dover Engineering Works

Walter Emden, Mayor of Dover, acquired a controlling interest and installed his nephew Vivian Elkington as manager. The company was renamed Dover Engineering Works Ltd, signalling a move from local foundry to national engineering supplier.

1914–1918

World War I: The Dover Patrol

During World War I, Dover Engineering Works was responsible for maintaining and supporting the 200‑strong Dover Patrol fleet, a Royal Navy force tasked with preventing German submarines entering the English Channel.

The company’s foundry and workforce became an integral part of Britain’s naval war effort, keeping ships operational in one of the most heavily contested maritime zones of the war.

Post‑War Civil Engineering Demand

Following the war, increasing vehicle traffic exposed weaknesses in traditional road covers. Dover Engineering Works began experiments to produce stronger, better‑fitting, non‑rocking access covers.

1928

Invention of the Gatic Cover

Vivian Elkington and the works foreman invented the first Gatic Cover—short for Gas And Air Tight Inspection Cover. The first installation was for Shell Petroleum in Malta, and that original cover remains in service today, demonstrating exceptional longevity.

International Recognition

Gatic covers gained rapid international acceptance, being specified for oil installations, docks, factories and airfields due to their airtight seal, stability and load‑bearing strength.

1940

World War II Evacuation

On 3 July 1940, with Dover designated a frontline town, the government ordered full evacuation of the factory within 48 hours.

In a remarkable logistical feat, all machinery, tools, moulds and workers (with families) were relocated to Watford, leaving only the structure for demolition if invasion occurred.

Return to Dover

Permission to rebuild at Charlton Green was granted in July 1945. The works reopened with fewer than 20 staff; many former employees having settled permanently in Watford after their homes were destroyed during the war.

Model Specialist Foundry

A Foundry Trade Journal feature (reprinted in the Dover Express, 26 March 1948) praised Dover Engineering Works as a high‑precision, mechanised foundry. By this time, Gatic covers were being exported to Persia, East Africa and West Africa.

Dover Engineering Works at the Dover Trade Fair

The Dover Engineering Works Ltd showcased its Elkington Gatic range at the 1954 Dover Trade Fair. The stand highlighted heavyduty steel covers and frames designed for roads, yards, factories, docks, and other industrial and municipal environments. Photographic panels and product displays emphasised largescale manufacturing capability at the Dover works, alongside the durability and versatility of Gatic systems, reflecting the company’s growing postwar prominence in British engineering and infrastructure supply.

Roy Bean – Shop Foreman

Roy Bean is shown at work in the company workshops, where he served as Shop Foreman following an exceptional 70‑year career with the business. His long service spanned periods of major industrial change, two world wars, a company relocation, and a return to Dover. His contribution remains a clear example of dedication and long‑held institutional knowledge within the company’s history.

Elkington Gatic at the Public Works & Municipal Services Exhibition

Elkington Gatic exhibited at the 1958 Public Works and Municipal Services Exhibition and Congress, presenting its products to local authority engineers and public sector decisionmakers. The exhibition stand featured a wide range of access covers, frames, and drainage solutions in operational layouts, with supporting imagery showing realworld municipal applications. This appearance reinforced Elkington Gatic’s role as a key supplier to public works, aligning the brand with the rapid modernisation of urban infrastructure in the late 1950s.

Brian Woodland – Videographer

Brian Woodland, affectionately known as “Speedy” by colleagues, a nickname earned from his motorbike exploits when he began his 36‑year career at Dover Engineering Works, was also an enthusiastic videographer outside of work. In the early 1960s, Brian brought his camera into the works and filmed a remarkable “day in the life” of Dover Engineering Works. We are sincerely grateful to the Woodland family for their generous permission to share and preserve this important piece of our history.

A Day in the Life of Dover Engineering Works

The footage captures workers clocking in, pattern making, smelting operations, hand casting, fettling of castings, and the end of the working day. This rare film provides an invaluable and authentic insight into the skill, processes, and people that shaped the business during this era.

1963

Death of Vivian Elkington

Vivian Elkington died aged 82 while the company was at the peak of its influence. As the inventor of the Gatic access cover system and a central figure in the company’s leadership, his work established new standards in access‑cover engineering. His invention and direction had a lasting impact, shaping infrastructure design and engineering practice worldwide.

Retirement of Director (Deputy Chairman) H.G.Barling

Souvenir photograph taken on 15 December 1965, showing 17 members of staff from Dover Engineering Works Limited. The photograph was taken at a dinner held to mark the retirement of Mr H. G. Barling from executive duties after 54 years of service with the company. Each member of staff pictured had more than 15 years’ service, with the longest‑serving member having completed 60 years.

Hydraulic Manhole Cover Lifting Innovation

In 1969, Dover Engineering Works Ltd became the first company to invent and produce dedicated cover‑lifting equipment, introducing the hydraulic manhole cover lifter. Contemporary trade articles highlighted its ability to enable one‑person operation, reducing accidents, back strain, and lost working time associated with lifting heavy covers and gratings. This invention marked a major step forward in access‑cover safety and handling and paved the way for the development of today’s Assist Lift range of covers, which continues to build on these original principles.

Newman Industries Acquisition

Dover Engineering Works became a subsidiary of Newman Industries (Bristol), marking a shift toward corporate ownership while maintaining Gatic’s manufacturing legacy.

1988

Receivership and Relocation

In July 1988, the company entered receivership. Purchased by the Parkfield Group, primary foundry operations moved to Irvine, Scotland, with only a small number of jobs retained in Dover. Dover Engineering Works vacated its long‑standing Charlton Green / Bridge Street foundry site. Operations moved to Holmestone Road, Poulton Close, Dover.

Elkington Gatic Ltd

Elkington Gatic Ltd was formally incorporated in 1990. This incorporation stands as a formal recognition of Elkington Gatic’s established reputation and provided a foundation for the modern brand that continues to operate within the specialised construction and infrastructure sector today.

Alumasc

Gatic became part of the Alumasc Group, strengthening its position as a leading UK manufacturer of engineered access covers and drainage systems within a wider specialist construction products portfolio.

Slotdrain Development

Responding to BAA Airports, Gatic developed Slotdrain, a monolithic, high‑capacity surface water drainage system with no moving parts, originally targeted at airports and ports handling extreme loads.

International Recognition

Industry publications recognised Elkington Gatic for over 75 years of airport engineering heritage, highlighting its safety‑critical role in global aviation infrastructure.

Continued Global Infrastructure Specification

Throughout the 2010s, Gatic access covers and Slotdrain systems continued to be specified for airports, ports and heavy‑duty infrastructure worldwide, maintaining the brand’s position in ultra‑heavy‑load applications. Gatic has now exported products to more than 114 countries globally.

ISO Certification & Modernisation

Gatic underwent a period of modernisation that reinforced both its operational standards and product leadership. The company achieved ISO 9001 certification, confirming the robustness of its quality management systems, alongside ISO 14001, demonstrating a formal commitment to environmental management and sustainability.

Industry First Integrated Drainage Calculator

Alumasc pioneered an industry-first drainage calculator that integrates Gatic Slotdrain, enabling designers to accurately size and specify high-performance drainage solutions with unprecedented speed and confidence.

Gatic Slotdrain Manufacturing Relocation

Gatic Slotdrain manufacturing transitioned from Dover to Halstead as part of a strategic move to enhance production capability and support future growth. The relocation enabled improved manufacturing efficiency while maintaining the high standards of quality and performance established in Dover. This milestone marked an important step forward in strengthening our long-term manufacturing operations.

Major International Contract Wins

Gatic, as part of Alumasc’s Water Management division, secured over £3.5m of new contracts across the Middle East and Far East, including:

Gatic Introduces the RotoBox

Gatic develops and introduces the RotoBox, a modular access and drainage box featuring an innovative rotating body design. The rotating configuration allows installers to adjust outlet orientation on site without additional components, reducing the need for bespoke fabrication. This design innovation cuts material usage, minimises waste, and lowers installation time and cost, delivering both sustainability and efficiency benefits for contractors and asset owners.

Major Investment in Halstead Manufacturing Facility

Gatic announced a £3 million investment in its Halstead facility, including the installation of two state‑of‑the‑art Mazak machines (600 and 800 models). Machines so advanced that only four are installed in the UK, significantly enhancing precision, capacity and future‑ready manufacturing capability.

Relocation to Halstead & James Cleverly Visit

Historic Transfer of Gatic Manufacturing

On 4 April 2025, The Rt Hon James Cleverly, TD VR MP, formally opened the new Gatic manufacturing and assembly facility in Halstead, Essex, marking the historic transfer of Gatic operations to the Alumasc Group’s Halstead site.

  • Halstead designated as the UK manufacturing hub for Gatic and Wade
  • Enhanced sustainability and manufacturing efficiency

James Cleverly described the move as “a major milestone for UK manufacturing, innovation and growth.”

Continued Investment in Advanced Mazak Manufacturing

Gatic made a further strategic investment in 2026, purchasing an additional specialist Mazak machine, meaning three of only five of these machines operating in the UK are now owned and run by Gatic, further strengthening in-house capability, resilience and manufacturing leadership.
